Mountain scenesThere are so many scenes in the mountains and foothills that make good black and white subjects. I especially enjoy shooting limber pines like the two shown below. Sadly, the famous Burmis Tree, near Blairmore AB, died many years ago. This was one of the most photographed trees in all of Canada. Attempts were made to support this tree but time has taken its toll, and it will soon be gone. Waterfalls are a natural part of all mountains and one of my favorite things to photograph, if the light is right. I also like to include shots of people using the mountains and parks, whether riding through on a train, paddling the Bow River in wintertime or hiking in the mountains. Most often I just like to take shots of the breathtaking scenery, whether it is of the mountains themselves, reflection shots in lakes and ponds, glaciers, or shots of unusual things like fog in early morning sunlight or the infamous and incredible Frank Slide, near Blairmore. |

Prairie scenesI think the prairies offer as much diversity for BW photography as the mountains do. Old abandoned bridges, churches, farmhouses, barns and grain elevators exist to be explored. Vehicles from the oldest grain wagons to grain and coal trucks, vintage cars, farm tractors and implements offer many different opportunities. I thought I had some good landscape pictures shot in the summer, then along came the winter and I had to start all over again. Winter brings its own unique set of circumstances and possibilties for black and white photography. Most of the shots below are from south of Drumheller, along the Red Deer River , or near Mossleigh and Blackie, southeast of Calgary. Interesting prairie subjects can be found anywhere east and south of Calgary, all the way to the border with Saskatchewan and the USA. |
