Kananaskis CountrySouthern Alberta, west of Calgary, is blessed with a unique provincial park system known as Kananaskis Country. The area starts just south of Highway 1, on Highway 40. It goes west to Canmore, and south almost to Highway 22 at Longview. Wildlife abounds throughout the parks, including grizzly bears, Big Horn sheep, and picas (small rock rabbits). Whether you drive Highway 40 to Longview, the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Lakes Trail, or Highway 66 west of Calgary to Elbow Falls, you are bound to encounter incredible scenery wherever you go. There are lots of campgrounds, hiking and ski trails, lakes, golf courses and more. Travel south of the Kananaskis Lakes on highway 40 to view a unique "rock glacier", the home of both picas and Big Horn sheep. Just beyond is the Highwood Pass, the highest road pass in Canada. |

Lake Louise and the Icefield ParkwayYou could spend all your vacation time just in and around Lake Louise, and you would not be disappointed. It is that gorgeous! Lake Louise, and the Victoria Glacier that feeds it are spectacular, as is Morraine Lake that is just to the southwest. Climb into the Valley of the Ten Peaks in autumn, when the larches turn color, for a scene that will take your breath away. If you really want to be impressed though, drive the full length of the Icefield Parkway to Jasper. On it you will see more lakes, rivers, mountains, canyons, waterfalls, glaciers and wildlife than you can imagine. This is truly one of the most spectacular drives in all of Canada! |
